Drivers Refusing to Haul Eggs
by Richard F. Wise

Many drivers, in the trucking industry, are refusing to haul eggs due in large part to the unreasonable amount of "claims for damage". ECI states the rules for transportation claims with complete disregard for the most important part of the "brokerage deal" (which is done in secret), the delivery. In a time when the egg market is depressed (egg glut and low prices), it is the truckers who are making up the difference by paying unreasonable "freight claims." Here's how it works.

If, during the time ECI brokers the deal between the shipper and consignee and the time of delivery, the market drops a penny, the consignee cannot renegotiate the deal to reflect the penny loss. But he can "claim the truck" (see penalties) for damage or being more than 2 hours late, to the tune of $500 or more. It appears to be a very common practice to recoup lost revenue from the trucking companies for the "depressed egg market."

It appears ECI (they make a commission on every egg transaction) is doing pretty well for themselves and the little guys are, as always, still paying the freight. (if the brokers are setting the price, why does it have to be done in secret?) and (if this is overseen by the government, why not independent negotiators to make sure there is no conflict of interest?) see Board of Directors>>>>>
If this is not overseen by the government, why not?
